Last week I was grabbing a date shake at Shields Date Garden, that old 17-acre farm off Highway 111, when an Indio dad next to me started laughing. His daughter would only eat three foods, he said. Chicken nuggets, plain noodles, and, of all things, dates. He was about to start her at a daycare and he had one real worry, the same one I hear from parents all over Indio. “What are they even going to feed her all day?” It is a fair question, and it is a bigger deal than most people think.
At Susy’s Family Childcare, food is not an afterthought. We cook healthy home-cooked meals for our daycare kids near Indio right in our own kitchen. No frozen trays. No mystery box that shows up on a truck. Real food, made fresh, the way you would make it at home if you had the time. We are just up the road in Bermuda Dunes, minutes from Old Town Indio and the Empire Polo Club, so lots of Indio families make the short drive to us.
Here is what a day of food looks like with us. Breakfast might be oatmeal with fruit or scrambled eggs and toast. Lunch is a warm, balanced plate, something like beans and rice with soft veggies, or chicken and pasta with a side of fruit. In the afternoon we do a light snack, maybe cheese and crackers or sliced apples. Everything is cooked in our kitchen that morning, not reheated from last month.
We think about balance, not just filling tummies. Every plate has a protein, a grain, and a fruit or vegetable. We keep sugar low and water close by all day. In the Coachella Valley heat, keeping kids full and hydrated matters even more, so we watch it closely. Good food helps a child focus, play, and sleep better, and parents notice the calmer evenings at home.

Indio is a food town, and we get it. Families here grew up on the birria and fresh pan dulce from spots like the panaderias downtown, the crepes at Gabino’s Creperie, and the giant sandwiches at TKB Bakery & Deli. Food is love here. So when we cook for your child, we cook food that feels familiar and warm, with flavors your family already knows.
We also cook for real bodies. If your child has an allergy, we plan around it and keep that food far away from her plate. If your family does not eat certain foods, tell us and we honor it. A picky eater like that dad’s daughter? We do not fight her at the table. We gently offer new foods next to the ones she loves, and over time, most kids surprise their parents.
A lot of big centers order food from an outside company. It shows up cold, gets warmed, and goes on the plate. It is fine, but it is not fresh, and it is not made for your one child. Because we are a small home program, we can do better. Our licensed family day care service cooks in small batches for a small group, so every meal is hot, fresh, and made with care.
Small numbers help at the table too. With our low child-to-teacher ratio, meals are calm, not a mad rush. Someone sits with the kids, helps the little ones, and turns lunch into a happy part of the day. That is when a shy eater relaxes enough to try the broccoli.
Feeding a baby is not the same as feeding a four-year-old, so we match the food to the child. In our infant daycare, we follow your feeding plan closely, from bottles to first soft foods, always on your schedule. As babies grow into our toddler daycare, we move them up to little forks, real cups, and new textures one step at a time.
Mealtime is also a great time to learn. Kids practice washing hands, using a napkin, saying please and thank you, and cleaning up their spot. These are the same self-help skills that go hand in hand with potty training support and getting ready for the bigger world of school.

We know Indio parents work hard. Some of you are up early and home late. The last thing you need after a long shift is to worry that your child ate junk all day, or barely ate at all. When you pick her up, we tell you exactly what she ate and how much. No guessing.
Whether your family is near the murals of Old Town Indio, out by Terra Lago, or over by Indio Towne Center, good food should not be a luxury. It should just be lunch. That is how we treat it. If you want to see the whole picture of how we care for your child, take a look at our full range of childcare services, then come taste the difference for yourself.
We do, right in our own kitchen. Meals are made fresh each day in small batches, not shipped in from an outside company. That means hot, real food made for our small group of kids.
Yes. Tell us about any allergy or food your family avoids, and we plan around it. We keep allergy foods away from that child’s plate and take it seriously every single day.
We never force a child to eat. We offer new foods next to familiar ones and let your child warm up at her own pace. Many parents are shocked at what their picky eater will try once she sees her friends enjoying it.
Balanced, kid-friendly plates with a protein, a grain, and a fruit or vegetable. Think oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, beans and rice or chicken and pasta for lunch, and simple snacks like apples or cheese and crackers.
