There is a moment every Palm Desert parent knows. It is about 4 o'clock, the sun is finally softening over the Santa Rosa Mountains, and your child has energy left over that the couch cannot hold. Maybe you have driven past Civic Center Park and seen kids running the grass while parents catch their breath on a bench. That itch to move, to climb, to dig, to run until your cheeks are pink  that is what a good backyard playground is for. At Susy's Family Childcare, outdoor play is not a break from the day. It is the day.

We are a licensed family day care service, which means your child grows up in a real home with a real backyard, not a warehouse room with a rug. Families from South Palm Desert near El Paseo, from the neighborhoods off Cook Street, and from the Palm Desert Country Club area come to us for the same reason: they want their child outside, moving their body, in a yard that is fenced, shaded, and watched closely all day long.

Anyone raising kids out here knows the desert has two speeds. From November to March, the weather is a gift, and we are outside for most of the morning and afternoon. In the hot months, we flip the clock. The children play outside early, before the pavement warms up, and again in the late afternoon when the shade returns. The middle of the day moves indoors where it is cool.

Our backyard is set up for little hands and short legs. There is soft ground under the climbing area, low steps a toddler can manage, a sand and water table for digging, ride-on toys for the driveway loop, and plenty of shade sails so no one is playing in direct sun. We rotate balls, chalk, bubbles, and garden tools so the yard feels new every week. Children learn to take turns on the slide, to push a friend on the swing, and to wait for their turn at the water table. Those are real skills, and they happen best outside.
